Dear Child Review Netflix (No Spoilers)

A 6-episode series based on a popular German novel, the story revolves around the abduction of a young woman, a plotline that might not seem particularly novel. However, what sets this series apart is its deep exploration of the psychological complexity within the victim’s mind, rather than the conventional pursuit of the perpetrator.

The complexity of the story begins with the survivor’s identity. She claims to be Lena, the young woman who disappeared 13 years ago, but is that the truth? Moreover, there are voices of the perpetrator echoing in her mind, issuing commands throughout. Initially, the narrative unfolds in a veiled manner, keeping the truth hidden, but there are continuous hints and suspicions that persist until the final episode.

The central character in this story is the enigmatic daughter, who follows her father’s rules, which others perceive as those of a villain. However, for her, he is the father she obediently abides by, living by various rules in their secluded, yet seemingly well-functioning household. She is homeschooled by her mother within their home, and when she ventures into the outside world, she believes her father will come and reunite their family once again.

Narrating the story with the mystery of both victims, along with recounting the investigation of a missing person case by the detective that happened 13 years ago, they reappeared with the victim’s family. There are hidden mysteries in their relationship, and the current case owner, who is leading the investigation to uncover the truth, follows the traces back to the victim’s address. In the first three episodes, it involves the mystery of a house investigation to help find her younger brother who is still in that house, with the complex and intriguing secrets.

In the first three episodes, the story successfully captures the suspense of the mysterious female figure and the enigmatic young girl. The house they are trapped in is filled with numerous secrets, and during this phase, the story remains highly intriguing. However, as the narrative transitions into the search for the hidden antagonist, the story begins to expand on a larger scale. The excitement gradually diminishes, and even though there are still many intriguing mysteries left unresolved, the storytelling becomes more ordinary. It lacks the thrilling suspense found in the first three episodes and concludes with a somewhat predictable climax. It ends rather quietly without any exciting or unexpected, which can leave the audience feeling somewhat disappointed.

However, what truly stands out and is highly captivating in the series is the enigmatic young girl character portrayed by Naila Schuberth . She had previously acted in Netflix’s “Bird Box: Barcelona.” She plays a young girl with deep and mysterious secrets, and she exudes a unique charm. Anyone who admires her should definitely follow and watch this series because she is the central core of the story, no doubt about it.

Overall, it’s a short series that is enjoyable in its complex storytelling and suspenseful intrigue in the first half. However, in the second half, it loses some of its momentum and falls into the realm of more typical series, which is somewhat disappointing. Nevertheless, it still manages to have a few surprising moments that make it worth watching.
