[Ehrengard Review Netflix] The film by Queen of Denmark, parodying Casanova.

Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction

Summary

In summary, this is a period comedy film that cleverly plays with the character of Casanova. Predicting the plot is difficult, and although it may have originated from Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, it doesn’t endorse any particular royal dynasty. While It may not look good outside, I recommend giving it a try as it is quite different from what you might expect.

Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction Review (No Spoilers)

This is a period film set in A fictional world, by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who currently reigns (51 years on the throne at the age of 83). It’s noteworthy as it marks the first time Netflix has directly with royalty in the production process. Queen Margrethe II served as a designer for costumes and locations and contributed to the adaptation of the screenplay from an old novel of the same name. Viewers can explore the behind-the-scenes of this production on Netflix (watch the behind-the-scenes here).

While this story may seem like from royalty, a quick glance at the cover and the summary might lead one to overlook its modern and entertaining approach to storytelling. It humorously at the old-fashioned male charmers who were popular and often played lead roles in that era. This is also reflected in the character of Cazotte, who attempts to charm the female lead, Ehrengard, a high-society lady with a warrior spirit reminiscent of a strong Valyrian woman. It’s a direct, albeit lighthearted, tale of seduction, but it’s presented with a touch of romance and beautiful dialogue in the style of the art-loving male seducer, which might come across as annoying at times but carries important subtext.

But what sets this apart from the usual erotica is that it’s rated 13+ and contains no explicit sexual scenes whatsoever. Instead, it focuses on the gambling antics of the main character, Cazotte, and The Grand Duchess who hires him to help her son, with Ehrengard as the target. However, neither of them is the main protagonist, and the leading lady herself has a smaller role. This is the narrative direction that viewers might not anticipate, as the story unfolds in an unexpected way until the near end when the significance of Ehrengard becomes clear. Which is unpredictable, providing a beautifully profound ending to the story.

The actors themselves are outstanding, and each of them effortlessly embraces their comedic roles within the high-society setting., particularly The Grand Duchess who seems to secretly enjoy the gambling game all along. Ehrengard is also incredibly graceful and fits her role as the story’s leading lady perfectly.

The scenes in the movie are inspired by various cut-and-paste images based on the imagination of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. The grand palace scene doesn’t actually exist, so the creators had to use computer graphics (CG) to bring it to life, and it turned out to be exceptionally beautiful. Similarly, the scenes inside the rooms were also created to be beautiful in line with the imagination.

The drawback of the story is perhaps its straightforward progression, focusing more on dialogue and lacking intense action scenes or highly emotional moments. However, this doesn’t pose a problem that makes the story dull in any way.
