[Muted Review Netflix] Psychology through Closed-Circuit Television (No Spoil)

Muted

Summary

Overall, it can be considered a psychological crime series with complex twists. It incorporates a fresh blend of elements such as romance, crime, and scientific experimentation, making the storyline intriguing to a certain extent. However, it falls short of being consistently captivating as it wastes time in attempting to deceive viewers into closely observing the characters’ lives. In the end, it takes a direction that lacks sufficient logical support, resulting in a somewhat disappointing conclusion. Nevertheless, with only 6 episodes, it is still worth recommending for viewers to give it a try.

Muted Review

The Spanish series delves into the psychology of the character Sergio (played by Arón Piper , known for his role as a high-profile gay teenager in the series Elite). He is a young boy who society deems a brutal killer, accused of throwing his parents off a building in opening scene. However, it is filled with unanswered mysteries that leave viewers questioning the hidden truth. The protagonist, Sergio, refuses to speak about the events that transpired, keeping it as the secret of the story and manipulating the audience throughout the six episodes to speculate whether he is a true murderer or an innocent victim.

The uniqueness of this story lies in its narrative approach through the experiment conducted by a beautiful young psychiatrist named Ana (played by Almudena Amor)), who is deeply intrigued by this case. She initiates a project to closely monitor Sergio’s life 24/7 using hidden cameras installed in his house and throughout the city, unbeknownst to him. Additionally, she utilizes an E.M. bracelet to monitor his vital signs, specifically tracking his heart rate as a warning signal of imminent danger, giving the series a modern and science-fiction-like crime psychology vibe.

Ana firmly believes that Sergio is innocent, while the experiment team remains divided, skeptical of hidden motives behind the project. The series unfolds with a mysterious and intriguing atmosphere. Moreover, there is a secretive character with power who becomes involved, raising suspicions that the murder that occurred six years ago might have a much more complex backstory than initially perceived.

Furthermore, the story delves into the realm of a psychological disorder known as Hybristophilia or criminal attraction, where individuals develop an intense sexual attraction towards criminals. In this series, several female characters fall into this obsession with Sergio, but the only one who truly opens her heart to him is Marta, a young woman who already has a boyfriend but finds herself drawn to him. This leads her to become an undercover informant, getting closer to Sergio in order to uncover the truth. As a result, she becomes entangled in her own emotions, causing her to become increasingly confused about her feelings.

The story attempts to conceal numerous clues and introduces new ones continuously, making the plot go much further than what was initially seen. However, when all the secrets are revealed, it doesn’t turn out to be exceptionally satisfying. The storyline takes a twist different from what was originally laid out, lacking sufficient logical support. Nonetheless, there is an intriguing element in the ending that prompts the audience to seek answers from the open-ended conclusion the story leaves behind.
