Nowhere The original Netflix movie from Spain follows a pregnant woman adrift at sea inside a shipping container, struggling to survive after escaping a repressive regime.

The movie by Albert Pintó , a member of the team that created the series Money Heist and Sky Rojo, but not the main director, features standout writing from Ernest Riera, who also co-wrote 47 Meters Down. This film, like the previous one, is set in a confined space, but instead of a shark cage, it revolves around a pregnant woman about to give birth, trapped in a floating shipping container. This premise adds an even more intense challenge compared to typical confined space films

The fun of this genre lies in creating reasonable obstacles and challenges, and this film succeeds in establishing a compelling reason for the characters to end up inside the shipping container from the very beginning. By intertwining the story with the plight of refugees and incorporating political imagination into the plot, it effectively portrays Spain being taken over by a repressive regime, forcing the protagonist to attempt an escape to another country. The strong initial premise sets the stage for a well-motivated narrative, and it builds depth in the main characters, introducing various hidden secrets that can be revealed later on. There’s a natural progression in unraveling her past, which ties into her rational pursuit of survival. For instance, her profession adds an extra layer of intrigue for the audience to discover who she really is as the story unfolds.

The movie is much more brutal than usual, starting with a major massacre scene in the early part, before encountering gruesome challenges from being trapped in a container while heavily pregnant. Food and water are limited, and water keeps flowing into the container without an exit. These challenges appear extremely cruel, especially since the protagonist is a pregnant woman who must find a way to survive in the first half before the second half becomes a story outside the container. While the brutality of the film significantly decreases, it still provides scenes that keep you on the fun with survival ideas before reaching a well-executed conclusion. There are scenes that offer suspense and help the characters survive multiple times in the ending, which makes for a well-rounded and logical conclusion

Anna Castillo , the lead actress of the series, delivered a compelling performance in her role, where she had to fight for the survival of her child and husband. She practically carried the entire story, occasionally supported by other characters during dream sequences. And there were also scenes that involved physical nudity for the sake of authenticity in the story.

 

Summary, this is a film set in a confined space, with a well-written script from the beginning to the end. The challenge is intensified by the main character’s pregnancy nearing delivery, and the obstacles that arise are reasonable. There are Thrilling scenes throughout the story, and although it slows down towards the end, there is almost no stretching. Additionally, there are intriguing character backstories that add more depth to the plot than just survival, giving the narrative more dimension than typical films of this genre. This is a must-watch!
