[THE MOTHER 2023 REVIEW] The action movie on Netflix that uses Jennifer Lopez’s name solely to deceive people into watching it.

THE MOTHER

Summary

Overall, this is a typical action movie that Netflix keeps churning out, relying on the star power of famous celebrities to attract viewers. This approach has been somewhat successful, but the story itself lacks impressiveness. There are few action scenes, and the plot follows the formulaic mother-child drama genre with a foolish and unconvincing villain. I would recommend skipping it unless you specifically want to see Jennifer Lopez.

THE MOTHER 2023 REVIEW Netflix

The action movie that uses Jennifer Lopez to attract viewers, but the storyline turns out to be a cliché with a highly skilled protagonist who must seek revenge or help their child. It’s a formulaic plot that has been commonly done, especially by Netflix, who seems to be overusing this genre.

Movies of this old-fashioned action genre can still be enjoyable. Take, for example, AKA released last month, which was well-made with a good plot and intentionally crafted action scenes. However, this particular movie seems to be intentionally deceiving viewers into thinking it’s an action film when the action scenes are actually minimal. It starts with an initial chase scene in the city and a subsequent raid on the enemy’s hideout. However, the rest of the film shifts to a survival story of a single mother in the wilderness, attempting to teach her child skills like driving, shooting, and setting traps. It heavily focuses on the drama of two characters who have never met before, leading very different lives—the mother, an assassin, and the teenage girl from the city. Initially, they clash and struggle to connect, but gradually they find common ground. The movie ends with a formulaic action scene.

The boring aspect of the movie, aside from the repetitive plot, is that it was poorly written with significant events missing. For instance, at the beginning of the story, the main antagonist easily captures the protagonist’s daughter, despite her being under the protection of the FBI. Then, the FBI disappears from the narrative without any explanation. There is only a minor involvement of a helpful African-American officer, played well by Omari Hardwick , but his character is abruptly cut off midway through the film. Similarly, towards the end, the antagonist suddenly finds the protagonist’s daughter and swiftly launches a rapid attack. Although the film tries to justify this by claiming that the antagonist is skilled and can be easily traced through internet records, there is no substantial reason provided for the audience to believe it. The storyline itself reveals that the antagonist’s group was devastated by the protagonist, leading to a vengeful pursuit.

The action scenes in this movie are clichéd and illogical, such as the car chase scene in the city. It’s unclear why the protagonist would drive recklessly and crash into everything in the city when the villain is simply running away. The raid scene on the enemy’s hideout is also very generic, and it hardly gives the impression that the criminal organization is as big as the story suggests. Furthermore, the main antagonist’s boss is poorly written and lacks intelligence, as seen in the scene where he leaves his gun and engages in hand-to-hand combat with the protagonist, which is quite foolish. It’s a highly disappointing portrayal, and such scenes are not fitting in today’s films that strive for realism and logical storytelling.

The movie seems to rely on Jennifer Lopez to carry the story, as it is clear that people come to watch her performance. However, the role itself doesn’t help her stand out, and it attempts to sell her sex appeal without much success. It is actually Lucy Paez , the young actress who portrays her daughter, who brings more depth to the film. Her character as an innocent girl forced to adapt to significant changes in life, make the story more interesting.
