Creature (Yaratilan) The Netflix limited series 8 episodes and is from Turkey. It follows a medical student who tries to break the boundaries of religion and science by bringing the dead back to life, but what comes back is far from what he expected.

This series takes the storyline of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and adapts it into the world of Islam. All the characters in the story are Muslims. The narrative is set in the early days of medicine when there were many infectious diseases for which effective treatments were lacking. Even though they knew what the diseases were, they lacked proper cures. The story uses this as a starting point, with the protagonist attempting to bring the dead back to life using ancient scriptures and a device similar to the one in the original Frankenstein story, where a dead body needs to be stimulated to come back to life.

While the plot of the series may resemble Frankenstein, the initial focus is more on religious beliefs than on science. The series takes the first four episodes to depict the process of reviving the dead, with the main character facing obstacles due to his unique Islamic beliefs that differ from others of his time. He attempts to challenge the norms to prove his own beliefs. During this period, viewers who do not have knowledge of or interest in Islam may find the frequent references to Islamic religious terminology. Although the storyline can be somewhat entertaining and engaging, the fact that it is essentially an Islamic version of Frankenstein might not appeal to a broad audience.

But after episode 4, the storyline takes a sharp turn in a completely different direction. It becomes a challenging adventure of the character Frankenstein, who has regained his life but with a lost memory. His disfigured appearance is so terrifying that people shun and drive him away, and he is abandoned by his creator, leading him to face a heart-wrenching fate. However, the story doesn’t paint the character in a negative light, as he finds genuine friendships along the way. The last four episodes become a dramatic mix of intense emotions, including love, friendship, and betrayal, all while his creator enjoys a happy life, creating a constant contrast with Frankenstein’s existence.

The series primarily focuses on recounting events from the past, with occasional inserts of present-day content. It tells the story of the main character, a medical student, who is rescued by a group of people on a mountain expedition searching for treasure buried in the snow. He shares this story with them, and they record it. This portion of the story serves as the final summary, even though it concludes in a concise and not-so-happy ending.

 

This series is a highly unusual adaptation of the Frankenstein story, starting with the ancient beliefs of Islam and delving into the realm of science. The later episodes are filled with intense and heart-wrenching drama. While the narrative may not always flow seamlessly and features some peculiar pacing due to the significant divergence from the original, the story remains engaging and intriguing because of its unique approach.
