The three-part documentary series on Netflix unfolds a compelling narrative in each episode. The first episode recounts events from 2012, introducing Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, an Italian doctor who innovates a novel method to treat patients with tracheal issues. He uses plastic tubes purportedly coated with stem cells as substitutes for actual tracheas and performs surgeries using this technique across various European countries, America, and Russia. The outcomes, however, result in the patients’ untimely deaths shortly after. The initial episode delves into three cases that the documentary closely follows, revealing the steps that propelled him to global acclaim.

In the second episode, the narrative shifts to an investigative phase where a documentary team diligently tracks the doctor for a year. They utilize evidence gathered from previous documentary works and conduct covert inquiries in hopes of cornering him with irrefutable evidence. However, the investigation proves to be far hard case, as it becomes entangled with a major medical organization.

The third episode shifts focus to the love story the first two episodes. It diverges from the medical investigation of the initial episodes but converges to provide a fitting conclusion. It unravels the mysteries his true identity. The series concludes with the resolution of the case, leaving the audience astounded.

 

What stands out in this series is that it hardly uses actors to portray Dr. Paolo Macchiarini because it has a documentary that intricately captures surgical procedures in Russia. The series incorporates this footage with candid interviews, including numerous scenes of his romantic relationship with his girlfriend. Almost every scene in the series involves, revealing how someone can deceive others on such a grand scale without showing any remorse. This highlights a person who falls under Narcissistic Personality Disorder  , believing that everything they say and do is the absolute truth, as if they were a deity creating their own world through deception. While similar cases in other stories often revolve around money, in this case, it seems to be the opposite and appears more sinister when the person’s actions harm the lives of those who genuinely trusted him. Just the presentation of three cases in the series is profoundly shocking.

In addition, the documentary also exposes the dark side of the medical institution and the related media, both of which played a role in building his reputation and deceiving people to this extent. The documentary reflects the issue of people being aware of wrongdoing but attempting to cover it up, which is equally frightening. However, the content in this aspect seems to be significantly truncated, providing only a brief summary of the narrative.

This documentary is a shocking deception that greatly undermines trust in the medical field. it’s almost unbelievable that someone like this exists in the world. The content is heart-wrenching, depicting the deaths of victims who trusted the doctor, intertwined with a fabricated love story that adds complexity to the deception and escalates to a level much larger than anticipated.
