Spy Kids: Armageddon Review (No Spoilers)

This is a new installment of the Spy Kids franchise, following the previous four films that were released in 2001. The original director, Robert Rodriguez, returns for this new installment. It’s important to note that the writer has not seen the previous four films, so there won’t be any comparisons to the older works. This installment is essentially a fresh start, a reboot, aimed at capturing the attention of a new generation of viewers who may not have seen the Spy Kids series before

This is a children’s movie with a very unique style, featuring adults and children embarking on adventures together in their own way, making it suitable for all genders and ages (rated 7+). Viewers of all ages will enjoy the well-balanced aspects of the film. In the adult portion, we get to see the work of the serious secret agents, with a secret agent format that may have been seen in other stories but in a children’s movie, it’s not too intense. Explosions are more like electric shocks, but when it switches to the kids’ version, it becomes adorable, creating emotional explosions that make you laugh, hungry, or transform enemies into something cute. The storyline aims to show the different perspectives of the new generation of children who prefer creative solutions instead of resorting to violence. Instead of exploding, kicking villains, or capturing villains, children can do things differently and more friendly, with no violence involved.

The movie attempts to address the perspectives of children that differ throughout the entire story. It also puts two children to the test of their own beliefs. In the beginning, the older sibling believes in the old-school spy methods, involving tricks and deception to survive. However, the younger sibling remains honest and steadfast in their straightforward approach. The film aims to teach children to see the truth and the consequences of both approaches throughout the story. Even the main antagonist of the story is related to the issue of whether he is genuinely evil or attempting to control the world in a non-violent manner, such as removing nuclear weapons from the world. Even the change in the mindset of the old-school spy parents who have been doing things the same way throughout their lives is explored. This is well done in the context of a children’s film, and adults with families can also enjoy the decisions made by the child characters in the different situations presented. However, everything is cleared up in a simple and child-friendly style throughout, as it’s a children’s movie after all.

In the CG aspect, it is considered much better than expected. Moreover, this is a streaming production that didn’t have a high budget compared to regular theater releases. Many scenes in this movie resemble the video games where the villain uses it as a tool to attack everyone in the world (the boss is the game creator). CG exotic creatures in the film appear in all the video games. This makes the children more enthusiastic, especially in the augmented reality (AR) world. Although many scenes may appear to be fake children won’t have any problems with it at all because, overall, it looks beautiful and blends quite well with the real world.

Both child and adult actors performed quite appropriately, with the child actors being particularly adorable. Everly Carganilla , especially, who played as the younger sister and seemed like the true protagonist of the story, is highly recommended. She had great chemistry with her on-screen older brother, played by Connor Esterson, who, although talented, had a penchant for cheating throughout the movie. She played her role genuinely and lovably innocent.

Overall, this is a family-friendly movie that is suitable for both children and adults. The story is entertaining and provides different perspectives on life in a correct manner. The CG work is well-done, and the child actors are adorable. The only downside may be the simple, typical of children’s movies. However, it aligns with the target audience for the film.
