The Other Zoey Review (No Spoiler)
The memory loss temporary romantic plot isn’t entirely new, but this film takes a deeper dive by introducing a love triangle. It explores the protagonist’s belief in non-romantic love, the chance encounter that leads to love, and the idea that two people who love each other must share similar interests, rooted in mathematics and science. This theme is embodied by both male leads, with Jack being an athlete and Miles being a computer science student. The romantic scenes shared with the female lead serve as a test to prove whether her long-held beliefs hold true or not.
This film might not offer a completely fresh storyline, and viewers might be able to predict the ending, it still manages to engage the audience throughout due to its detailed storytelling. The aspect of trying to prove the endearing beliefs of the protagonist is charming. There are also moments of significant disappointment when her secret is revealed, followed by a resolution towards the end that follows the typical party scene formula but has a unique twist because of her being a brilliant computer science student
Furthermore, the actors themselves have their charm. Josephine Langford is so beautiful that she transcends her Nerd IT girl role, while Drew Starkey plays as Zach, an athlete who looks adorable and fits well with the character’s initial perception of being dumb. The film also has a small twist regarding the stereotypical notion that athletes aren’t good at studying, with the leading lady helping him improve by playing chess with him. Miles, played by Archie Renaux, known for his role in the series “Shadow and Bone ,” is incredibly handsome as the MIT student who shares the same interests as the lead actress. There’s also a humorous involving Zach’s little sister, played by Olive Abercrombie, who is incredibly charming in her role. She’s undoubtedly an actress to watch for in the future.
In summary, It’s a romantic movie with a seemingly typical plot, but it adds a lot of details that enhance the story. The film explores the concept of proving love through mathematics and science, and it involves a love triangle, adding depth to the storyline. While you can predict most of the plot, it’s still enjoyable to watch.
